Become an SOS Volunteer: Give the Gift of Time

Volunteers play a vital role in the development of SOS children. By sharing your time and talent, you can help change a child's life. We understand that your time is valuable, and SOS truly appreciates this dedication. We accommodate our volunteers by creating a flexible schedule and assistance when needed. Join us as we change the life of a child.
"One of the highlights of tutoring was receiving a graduation picture from a student I had been working with for many years. Written on the back was, 'This is what all your hard work was for. Thank you.' " Bonnie, SOS volunteer tutor for eight years

Home Helpers

Up to six children live in every SOS home with a paid, professional SOS Foster Parent.  Imagine preparing a meal, cleaning and maintaining a home, helping six children with their homework, and addressing the individual needs of each child.  Our Home Helpers come in once a week to assist with routine household responsibilities, allowing foster parents at SOS Children’s Villages Illinois to spend extra one-on-one and group time with the children.

Tutors

Foster children are often at a distinct academic disadvantage resulting from frequent disruptions and placement changes.  Tutors play a critical role in providing targeted one-on-one tutoring to children, giving them the instruction, support, and attention they need to improve academically.

Mentors

Because children have been forgotten and neglected prior to arriving at SOS Children’s Villages Illinois, positive role models play an instrumental role in their overall growth and development.  Mentors spend time with children both individually and in groups, providing insights and acting as a trusted guide.

Gardeners

The Wellness Garden provides children at the Chicago Village with fresh produce and provides opportunities to learn about healthy eating habits, sustainability, locally grown products, and food deserts.  Help us by working in the garden or hosting an educational workshop about these topics.

Birthday Party Volunteers

Birthday party volunteers help children celebrate important milestones in their lives.  Volunteers organize bi-monthly birthday parties and help fundraise for birthday gifts.

Social Media Advocates

SOS Children’s Villages Illinois is working to build its social media presence and support base.  Share, tweet, like, and post the latest news and updates about SOS Children’s Villages Illinois to your friends and followers, raising more awareness and support for the children.

Community Service Projects

SOS Children’s Villages Illinois has several projects that help maintain, improve, and clean the Villages and Village facilities.  Consider a Village clean-up, spring planting, or maintenance support for your next group project.

College Prep Mentors

100% of the children living at SOS Children’s Villages Illinois graduate from high school.  Nationally, only 3-11% of foster children obtain a college degree.  Help children at SOS Children’s Villages Illinois complete higher education through application support and review, standardized test preparation, resume review, networking, and advice regarding choosing a major, school, or career.

Event Volunteers

SOS Children’s Villages Illinois hosts several events throughout the year.  Volunteer at specific, one-day events either individually or as a group.  Responsibilities vary by the event.
